Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) even recommended lavender as an elixir for coughs: "If anyone boils Speik-lavender (three spoonfuls) in wine (one liter) and drinks it lukewarm often, it soothes liver-lung-suffering, softens the dull feeling in his chest, and makes for a sharp mind (scientia) and a clear combination-giving (ingenium). He who has no wine, boils it in water and adds honey." (Causae et Curae, 1150). She further wrote in her book Physica that if someone who has many lice smells lavender, the lice would die.
