What do antioxidants do for the skin?

Cells need oxygen, but prolonged exposure to oxygen causes oxidation. With metals, we also call this rusting. Before you freak out at the idea that skin cells can look like a rusty nail, let's just stick to oxidation. We can summarize it as follows: due to all internal and external influences, cells deteriorate in quality. Logically, the greater that influence, the harder cells deteriorate.

Negative influences from within include: improper eating, stress, not enough sleep, smoking, alcohol and hormone imbalances. From the outside, cells are affected by everything in the air, everything you touch and any kind of radiation (solar, chemical and electromagnetic), among others. That's quite a lot, poor cells. Well there are also good substances and influences. With these, the harmful effects can be remedied to some extent.

Oxidants versus antioxidants

The negative substances and influences are called oxidants (free radicals). These affect the cells. It was discovered almost a century ago that certain substances counteract the effects of these oxidants. These substances are called antioxidants. Antioxidants are certain vitamins, green tea, certain berries, Q10, etc. These antioxidants were increasingly added to cosmetic products from that time. Over the years, it became more and more determined which antioxidants exist and which ones have the most effect. For example, green tea was one of the first substances whose good antioxidant properties were discovered. Antioxidants clear away free radicals and have an opposite effect. Free radicals age and deteriorate cells; antioxidants counteract aging and restore cells to good condition.

You can take antioxidants, either as tea or as a supplement. Do that for the most part. There are also many products that have antioxidants added to them. The quality can vary greatly. It is important that the origin and quality of the antioxidants are good. Of course, the other ingredients must also be of good origin and quality. Next, it is important that the absorption of the antioxidants is good and that the substances do not counteract each other or cancel out their effects.

At emerginC, the raw materials are of top quality and there has been extensive research into which antioxidants are good for the skin.

Astaxanthin; a super antioxidant

An antioxidant with very powerful effects is astaxanthin. It is a substance produced by algae or obtained by fermentation with red yeast. Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble substance and can be absorbed by cells. This has the advantage that astaxanthin can clear free radicals both inside and outside the cell. Among many other beneficial effects, astaxanthin is beneficial for the skin because it fades wrinkles and improves moisture. It also protects the skin from UV rays, which of course plays a big role in preventing skin damage. In areas with a lot of air pollution, a cream with astaxanthin will protect against that as well.

emerginC Scientific Organics skin care with astaxanthin

It is therefore recommended to use products containing this antioxidant every day. Such as the emerginC Scientific Organics Peptide Booster Serum; an advanced, active serum with organic peptides against skin aging. With ColhibinPF™ from rice extract that inhibits the breakdown of collagen and protects the skin from stress factors caused by UV radiation. Also, the emerginC Scientific Organics Eyelight Cream is astaxanthin-based; strong in anti-aging and fighting puffiness and dark circles. Promotes the removal of moisture and waste products and combats wrinkle formation.

Alpha lipoic acid one of the most powerful antioxidants

Alpha lipoic acid is another powerhouse. As much as 400x more powerful than vitamin C. Particularly in terms of fighting and neutralizing free radicals, alpha lipoic acid is indispensable in the fight against skin aging and sagging. Alpha lipoic acid is found in small amounts in, for example, liver, spinach and broccoli. It is both fat- and water-soluble and therefore active both inside and outside the skin cells. Once alpha lipoic acid passes the cell walls, it has an even stronger neutralizing effect on free radicals as outside the cells. Alpha lipoic acid also repairs and stimulates the production and energy absorption of skin cells. In doing so, it supports the action of vitamins C, E and H and coenzyme Q10 by "recycling" them, when they are used up, thus prolonging their ability to neutralize free radicals. Alpha lipoic acid improves the metabolism and energy production of skin cells by being small enough as a molecule to penetrate to the mitochondria, where energy is produced. It also helps the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant, which inhibits the production of free radicals and protects against free radical-induced cell damage from e.g. smoking UV radiation and toxin exposure. It also repairs proteins in skin cells, has anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on the skin. With regular use, it will refine the skin, reduce coarse pores and improve skin texture.
